ARCLE approaches architecture as a collaborative process of discovery. Every project begins by understanding the people, places, behaviours, histories and forms of knowledge that shape its context. At the centre of this process is the Circle: a project-specific community formed around the questions each project raises. We bring different forms of knowledge and experience into the design process, building a community around the project as we design for the community it will become part of. Each Circle is different, because who we design with can fundamentally shape the architecture that follows.

FORMS ITS OWN CIRCLE.

Before there is a design,
there is a room.
Who is in the room begins to shape the design.

For each project, ARCLE forms a temporary Circle around the questions that need to be understood. It may bring together professional expertise, practical knowledge, lived experience and first-hand knowledge of a place or community.
The Circle enters at the beginning — before the concept is formed — so these perspectives can shape the project rather than simply respond to it later.

WE LISTEN BEFORE WE DESIGN.
We approach each project as a whole rather than as a collection of separate problems. Before we design, we listen to people and to places — to everyday experience, behaviours, memories, stories, cultural layers, ways of making and forms of knowledge that may never appear in a conventional brief.

We are interested not only in how a space will work, but in how it may be perceived, felt and remembered. How might it make someone feel safe, curious, calm, connected or overwhelmed? Light, sound, scale, material, movement, nature, memory and social relationships all shape the experience of a place.

For us, architecture emerges from understanding these relationships together — spatial, psychological, social, cultural and environmental — rather than treating them as separate layers.

The Circle is how we bring these different ways of knowing into the project early enough to influence the architecture itself.
